Kintsugi supports a tax engine integration with Intuit Enterprise Suite (IES). Like the read-only integration, it syncs your transaction data into Kintsugi for reporting and compliance. On top of that, Kintsugi calculates sales tax in real time and writes it back to your IES invoices.
This guide walks you through connecting IES to Kintsugi and setting Kintsugi as your tax engine. The setup works the same way as QuickBooks Online, with one main difference: IES manages multiple entities, so you complete the IES setup once for each entity you connect.
Note: Intuit Enterprise Suite is currently available in the United States only. If you use QuickBooks Online rather than IES, follow the QuickBooks Tax Engine Integration Guide instead.
Make sure the following are ready before you start:
Admin access to your IES account. The connection must be authorized by an IES admin user. If that admin is later removed or loses admin access, the connection will break and another admin will need to reauthorize it.
Completed onboarding tasks in Kintsugi. Tax collection can only be enabled once the following are done:
Initial data import: the first sync from IES has finished.
Organization details: company information, address, and tax IDs are added.
Registrations: you have at least one completed registration.
Product categorization: your products are categorized correctly.
Addresses: invalid or missing addresses on imported invoices are corrected.
⚠️ Important: Kintsugi only calculates and applies tax for jurisdictions where you have a registration in Kintsugi. If an invoice is for a jurisdiction where you are not registered, Kintsugi leaves the invoice unchanged and does not add a note to it.
Work through the IES Read-Only Integration Guide from start to finish. Confirm your IES card in Data Sources shows a status of Read-Only before continuing.
Kintsugi needs a dedicated Kintsugi tax rate in IES so it can write the calculated tax back to your invoices. Complete these steps in IES for each entity you connect.
In IES, go to All Apps > Sales tax > Sales tax settings. If sales tax is not turned on yet, turn it on first.
Make every existing tax agency inactive.
For each agency, click Edit and Make inactive.
If you have custom rates from an old setup, remove them.
Create a new Custom Rate.
Click the arrow and select Add custom rate.
Fill out the form:
Name: The name must start with Kintsugi. You may add words after it, for example, “Kintsugi Sales Tax.”
Agency: Choose agency.
Rate: set the rate to 0.
Click Save.
Switch to your next entity in IES and repeat these steps.
⚠️ Important: The Kintsugi custom rate is required. If an entity does not have a tax rate named Kintsugi, Kintsugi will not apply tax to that entity's invoices. You only need one Kintsugi custom rate per entity.
In Kintsugi, go to Data Sources and find the IES card then click the Enable Tax Collection button.
Complete the Enable Tax Collection setup checklist shown.
The Setup Checklist covers your data import, organization details, and registered jurisdictions.
It also asks you to confirm that automatic sales tax is turned off in Intuit, which you completed in Step 3. Tax collection turns on as soon as you enable it.
For a full walkthrough of each checklist item, see Enable Tax Collection on a Tax-Engine Integration.
Once tax collection is enabled, the connection card shows a Tax Engine label. Tax collection is turned on per connection, so repeat this step for each entity you connected.
In Kintsugi, go to Products to see the list of products imported from IES.
Check that each product is placed under the correct category and subcategory, then approve it. Accurate classification is what makes tax calculation accurate, since not all products are taxed the same way.
For how to mark a product as exempt, see Managing Product Taxability below.
In IES, go to All Apps > Invoices.
Click Create Invoice to create a new invoice.
Select the customer, add your products or services, and enter the amounts.
In the sales tax field, select your Kintsugi rate (for example, Kintsugi 0%).
If you leave it on automatic calculation, Kintsugi still replaces the tax, as long as the Kintsugi custom rate from Step 3 exists.
Click Save and close. Saving the invoice is what signals IES to send it to Kintsugi for tax calculation, so always save new invoices.
Wait about 30 to 40 seconds, then reopen or refresh the invoice. The calculated sales tax will appear on the invoice.
TIP: After the tax is applied, check the memo on the invoice. Kintsugi adds a tax calculation audit trail that shows the rate and tax amount applied, and notes any lines that were treated as exempt. The audit trail is limited to 4,000 characters, so very long breakdowns may be cut off.
Kintsugi will continue to calculate tax on each new invoice you save.
The recommended way to handle product taxability is to create your products as taxable in IES and manage exemptions in Kintsugi:
In Kintsugi, go to Products and open the product.
Select the category and subcategory as Miscellaneous > Exempt.
Approve the product.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Approved products are locked. Once a product is approved in Kintsugi, changes to its taxability in IES will not update it. If you need IES changes to sync for an approved product, contact Kintsugi Support to reopen it.
Log in to Kintsugi > Go to Configuration > Select Settings > Switch ON/OFF the Use Product Tax Exemption Status from Source
We highly recommend to keep this OFF so products sync as taxable by default.
The Tax Exempt column in Kintsugi will show "No" even if the product is marked as tax exempt in your source system, and Kintsugi's AI classification determines taxability instead
Kintsugi's product classification AI will review and classify the product, even if it's marked as exempt in your source system. This helps catch potential misclassifications and ensures accurate compliance.
See Choosing How Kintsugi Handles Exempt Products from Your Integrations for complete guide.
If you switch it ON: Products will retain their exempt status from your source system, bypassing Kintsugi's classification.
If you’re switching it ON in Kintsugi, make sure to set-up your product/services sales tax category in IES.
Go to All Apps > Products & Services > Create Item > Fill in the details on the sidebar > Under Sales, choose Non-Taxable as Sales Tax Category
Kintsugi calculates tax based on the addresses on your invoices. When entering customer addresses in IES, follow this format:
Street address in the street field
Full city name
Two-character state code (for example, CA for California)
A valid ZIP code. If the ZIP code is invalid, no tax will be calculated or applied.
Two-character country code, not the full country name (for example, US)
When calculating tax, Kintsugi uses the ship-to address first. If it is invalid or missing, Kintsugi falls back to the bill-to address, then to the customer's saved address, then to your business address. Keeping the ship-to and bill-to addresses valid gives you the most accurate result.
IES uses the same address fields as QuickBooks Online. For complete instructions, see How to Enter Customer Addresses Correctly in QuickBooks.
IES lets you manage several entities under one login, and one Kintsugi organization can hold a connection for each of them. There is no set limit on the number of entities you can connect.
For each entity:
Connect it to Kintsugi (Step 1). When Intuit asks you to select your company, choose that entity.
Set up the Kintsugi custom rate in IES for that entity (Step 3).
Enable tax collection on that entity's connection (Step 4).
If you select an entity that is already connected, Kintsugi updates the existing connection instead of creating a new one.
Q: I saved an invoice but no tax was applied. What should I check?
A: Check the following:
The entity has a tax rate named Kintsugi in IES (Step 3).
Tax collection is enabled on that entity's connection in Kintsugi (Step 4).
You have a registration in Kintsugi for the invoice's jurisdiction.
The invoice has a valid address, including a valid ZIP code.
You saved the invoice and waited 30 to 40 seconds before refreshing it.
Q: Do I need to turn off automatic sales tax in IES?
A: Yes. The Setup Checklist asks you to confirm it. As long as the Kintsugi custom rate exists, Kintsugi replaces the tax on your invoices, but completing Step 3 keeps IES's own tax calculation from conflicting with Kintsugi's.
Q: What does Kintsugi change in my IES account?
A: Kintsugi updates the sales tax amount on your invoices and adds the tax calculation audit trail to the invoice memo. It does not change your customers, products, or other records.
Q: Do I need a separate Kintsugi custom rate for each entity?
A: Yes. Each IES entity has its own sales tax settings, so each entity needs its own Kintsugi custom rate.
Q: Why does the Intuit authorization screen mention QuickBooks Online?
A: Intuit Enterprise Suite is built on the same platform as QuickBooks Online, so Intuit's consent screen uses QuickBooks Online wording. Your IES data is what gets connected.
Q: Does Kintsugi work with QuickBooks Desktop or QuickBooks Enterprise Desktop?
A: No. Kintsugi supports Intuit Enterprise Suite and QuickBooks Online only.
