Hawaii Credentials for Importing Registration

How to locate the state-issued credentials required for importing your Hawaii registration.
Updated 2 days ago

To import your existing Hawaii sales tax registration into Kintsugi, you'll need to provide a few details issued by the Hawaii Department of Taxation when you registered your business. Hawaii manages its tax accounts through Hawaii Tax Online (HTO), the state's online portal for filing, paying, and managing business taxes. Once imported, Kintsugi can manage your Hawaii sales tax filings.

Required Credentials

When importing an existing Hawaii sales tax registration into Kintsugi, you'll need the following:

  • FEIN

  • Account ID

  • At least one of the following for validation:

    • Letter ID

    • Payment (one of the last three payment amounts)

    • Return (Total Tax Due from one of your previous three returns)

What's My FEIN?

Your FEIN (Federal Employer Identification Number) is the nine-digit number assigned to your business by the IRS. It is used to identify your business for federal tax purposes and is required to match your account in the Hawaii Department of Taxation's system.

Where to find it

You can find your FEIN in any of the following places:

  • IRS EIN confirmation letter. When the IRS issued your EIN, they sent a confirmation letter (CP 575 or CP 147C). Your FEIN appears at the top of this letter.

  • Your Hawaii Tax Online (HTO) account. Log in at hitax.hawaii.gov and review your business account profile to confirm the FEIN on file.

  • Hawaii Department of Taxation correspondence. Any notices or letters from the Hawaii DOT may reference your FEIN.

  • Other business documents. Your FEIN also appears on previously filed federal tax returns, payroll filings, and bank account documents.

What's My Account ID?

Your Account ID is the tax account number assigned to your business by the Hawaii Department of Taxation when your General Excise Tax (GET) or sales tax account was created. It typically follows the format: GE-###-###-####-01 (or a similar alphanumeric structure depending on your account type).

Where to find it

You can find your Account ID in any of the following places:

  • Your Hawaii Tax Online (HTO) account. Log in at hitax.hawaii.gov and navigate to your account summary. Your Account ID will be listed on the account overview page.

  • Hawaii Department of Taxation correspondence. Any notices, letters, or filing reminders from the Hawaii DOT will reference your Account ID.

  • Your Hawaii Certificate of Registration. If you registered for a GET license, the Hawaii DOT issued a Certificate of Registration that includes your account number.

What's My Letter ID?

A Letter ID is a unique identifier printed on correspondence sent to you by the Hawaii Department of Taxation. It is used to verify your identity when accessing or importing your account.

Where to find it

You can find your Letter ID in any of the following places:

  • Hawaii Department of Taxation notices or letters. Any correspondence mailed to you by the Hawaii DOT will include a Letter ID printed on the document.

  • Your Hawaii Tax Online (HTO) account. Log in at hitax.hawaii.gov, navigate to your account, and check your correspondence history for any letters that include a Letter ID.

What's My Payment Amount?

If you don't have a Letter ID, you can verify your account using one of your last three payment amounts — the dollar amount you paid to the Hawaii Department of Taxation on a recent filing.

Where to find it

You can find a recent payment amount in any of the following places:

  • Your Hawaii Tax Online (HTO) account. Log in at hitax.hawaii.gov and navigate to your payment history for your GET or sales tax account.

  • Your bank or credit card records. If you made payments electronically, your bank statements will show the exact payment amounts and dates.

  • Hawaii Department of Taxation correspondence. Payment confirmation notices from the Hawaii DOT will reference the amount paid.

⚠️ Important: The payment amount you provide must exactly match one of the last three payments on file with the Hawaii Department of Taxation.

What's My Return (Total Tax Due)?

If you don't have a Letter ID or a recent payment amount, you can verify your account using the Total Tax Due from one of your previous three returns — the total amount of tax owed as reported on a recent filing.

Where to find it

You can find your Total Tax Due in any of the following places:

  • Your Hawaii Tax Online (HTO) account. Log in at hitax.hawaii.gov and navigate to your filing history to review your previous GET or sales tax returns.

  • Copies of your filed returns. If you filed paper returns or saved copies of your electronic filings, the Total Tax Due appears on the return itself (typically on the summary or final line of the form).

  • Your tax preparer or accountant. If someone else prepared your returns, they will have copies that include the Total Tax Due for each filing period.

⚠️ Important: The Total Tax Due you provide must match the amount reported on one of your last three returns on file with the Hawaii Department of Taxation.

Next Step

Once you provide the required credentials, Kintsugi will initiate the third-party access request. You do not need to validate or approve the request separately, as Kintsugi will complete this step on your behalf.

Once access is confirmed, Kintsugi can continue with the registration import setup in the app.
