Welcome to Kintsugi. This article walks you through your dashboard, what each section is telling you, and where to go next when something needs your attention.
After installing the Kintsugi app, complete the initial setup. This includes:
Import transactions: connect your ecommerce and billing platforms so your transaction data flows into Kintsugi.
Add presence: specify where your business operates.
Add organization details: input your company information.
Add bank details: add your bank details for tax payments.
Once you have completed these steps and your integrations are set up, your dashboard is ready.
The dashboard provides a summary of your key business data. Here’s what you’ll see:
The Exposure Map is the fastest way to see where you stand. It shades each jurisdiction in a color that reflects your tax obligation there, so you can tell at a glance where you are covered, where action is needed, and where an obligation is coming.
Use the region selector at the top right of the map to switch between the United States and the other regions Kintsugi supports. For the full list, see Kintsugi Global Coverage: Supported Regions and Countries.
Color | Legend label | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
Light gray | Not exposed | Nothing has created an obligation here yet | Nothing for now |
Yellow | Approaching | You have reached 80 to 99 percent of the threshold | Plan your registration |
Salmon pink | Exposed | The obligation is live and you are not registered | Start a registration |
Light blue | Registering | Your registration request is in progress | Watch Pending Tasks |
Green | Registered | An active registration is on file | Nothing, filings take over |
Light gray: Not exposed. Light gray is the resting state. It means Kintsugi has assessed your activity in that jurisdiction and found nothing that creates an obligation: your totals sit below 80 percent of the local economic nexus threshold, no physical presence is recorded, and no tax has been collected there. Jurisdictions where you have no recorded activity at all also stay light gray. Nothing is required from you while a jurisdiction is light gray, although you can still register voluntarily if a marketplace, a vendor, or a resale certificate requires it.
Yellow: Approaching. Yellow is your early warning, and it is the one color that is set purely by a percentage. Kintsugi tags a jurisdiction as Approaching once your totals reach 80 percent of that jurisdiction's economic nexus threshold, and it stays yellow through 99 percent. The moment you reach 100 percent, the color changes to Exposed. Because every jurisdiction sets its own limit, and some measure sales value while others measure transaction counts or either one, 80 percent is a different number in every place: 80 percent of a 100,000 USD threshold is 80,000 USD, while 80 percent of a 200 transaction threshold is 160 transactions. Yellow is the best moment to act, because registering before you cross means you never have a stretch of unregistered sales to clean up afterwards.
Salmon pink: Exposed. Salmon pink means the obligation is live and you are not registered yet, so this is the color to work through first. It is worth knowing that pink is not only about crossing a sales threshold. Kintsugi applies it when any one of three triggers fires: economic nexus, where your sales or transactions reached 100 percent of the threshold; physical nexus, where you have a recorded presence such as an office, staff, or inventory; or collected tax nexus, where tax was collected in that jurisdiction while you were not registered. That is why a jurisdiction with modest sales can still turn pink. Open the Monitoring tab to see which trigger applied and the date it was met, then start your registration from there.
Light blue: Registering. Light blue means your registration request has been submitted and is moving through the process, including registrations filed under a one stop shop scheme where that applies. A jurisdiction changes from pink to light blue as soon as the request is submitted, so light blue is confirmation that the item is with our team rather than sitting with you. There is usually nothing further for you to do, but keep an eye on Pending Tasks: if a jurisdiction needs a document, a signature, or a portal credential from you, it stays light blue until that arrives.
Green: Registered. Green means an active registration is on file for that jurisdiction and Kintsugi can calculate tax, collect it, and prepare returns. Green covers both registrations our team completed for you and registrations you obtained yourself and then added to Kintsugi, so if you registered directly with a tax authority, add that registration in Kintsugi to move the jurisdiction to green. Once a jurisdiction is green, the map needs nothing more from you and your ongoing work moves to the Filings page.
Hover over any state or country to see its details, including the date the obligation was met, tax collected, and tax liability.
The map is a summary. For threshold progress, the reason behind an exposure, and the transactions behind it, use the Monitoring tab (formerly known as the Nexus tab).
Colors update automatically as new transactions import and process, so allow a little time after a large import before a color changes.
Q: A jurisdiction turned yellow. Do I need to register right away?
A: No. Yellow means you have not met the threshold, so there is no obligation yet. Treat it as a planning signal. If your sales there are growing, submitting the registration while you are still yellow is the smoothest path, because you can begin collecting on the day the obligation starts instead of catching up later.
Q: Why is a jurisdiction pink when my sales there are small?
A: Because exposure has three triggers, not one. A remote employee, inventory in a warehouse, or tax that was collected there while you were unregistered will each turn a jurisdiction pink regardless of sales volume. The Monitoring tab shows you which one applied. For more on how these rules work, see Understanding US Sales Tax Nexus Rules.
Q: I registered on my own. Why is the jurisdiction not green?
A: Kintsugi turns a jurisdiction green when it has an active registration on record. Add your existing registration in Kintsugi so it can be matched to that jurisdiction, and the color will update on the next refresh.

Each tab in this section acts as a category. When you click on a tab, it becomes highlighted or underlined. This visual cue indicates that you’ve selected that particular data view.
Upon selecting a tab, two primary graphic breakdowns appear:
Details by Year: a visual presentation of the data over time. You will see a line graph that shows growth and fluctuations in the data for each year.
Details by Jurisdiction: a breakdown of the data by geographical location or legal jurisdiction. The bar graph helps you understand how data varies from one area to another.
