How Auto File Works

Understand Kintsugi's Auto-Approve and Auto-File features, which generate filings on the 1st and auto-approve on the 5th each month, plus how to pause one.
Updated 12 days ago

Auto File is Kintsugi's automated filing feature. When it is ON, your current-period filings are approved and submitted on your behalf each month, so you stay compliant without having to log in and approve each return.

Auto File is on by default for all accounts. You can see it under Configuration > Settings. Doing nothing is a valid choice, not a missed deadline.

How Auto File Works Each Month

Filing generation (1st of the month)

Kintsugi generates your filings for the period that just ended, based on your transaction data. You'll receive an email letting you know they are ready to review.

Review period (1st to 4th)

Your filings sit in Unfiled status. You can review the totals, approve early, or pause. While a filing is Unfiled, its total can still change as your connected platforms sync new or updated transactions.

Approval (5th of the month)

Any filing you have not paused or approved yourself is approved by Kintsugi on your behalf. Once approved, the filing locks: the amount is final and no further changes can be made.

Submission and payment

Kintsugi submits the approved return to the tax authority and remits payment from your linked bank account. Payment is typically withdrawn about two business days after filing.

Need More Time?

Use the Pause option if you need additional time to review or correct data before a filing is approved and locked.

  • Pause is available only while a filing is still Unfiled, so before the 5th. Once a filing is approved, the Pause option no longer appears.

  • When you pause, you choose a resume date. The latest resume date you can select is the 15th of the month.

  • A paused filing is never approved on your behalf.

Step-by-step instructions are in the article How to Pause a Filing

IMPORTANT: Any changes to your data (addresses, product classifications, exemptions, missing transactions) need to be made before the filing is approved. After approval, corrections are handled as an amendment. See Amendment Request Process and Timeline.

What Auto File Does Not Cover

Auto File applies to current and upcoming filings only.

Back filings (returns for past periods) are never approved automatically, even with Auto File on. They stay in Unfiled status until you review and approve them yourself. If you asked us to file past-due returns and nothing has been submitted, check the Filings page for back filings awaiting your approval. Opting Out of Auto File

Auto File is enabled by default and managed at the account level by our team. There is no toggle in the app to turn it off.

If you prefer to approve every filing manually, contact support using the chat bubble and we'll update your account. Please note what opting out means:

  • Nothing is automatically approved on your behalf. Each filing waits for you to review and approve it in the app.

  • You will receive a reminder email when filings are ready, and a final reminder before the deadline.

  • Filings not approved by the 10th of the month are skipped and will not be filed by Kintsugi. You remain responsible for filing those returns.

Instructions for manual approval are in Manually Approving Unfiled Filings in the Kintsugi App.

Why Auto File Helps

Nothing to remember

Your returns are approved and filed on time without a monthly login.

Fewer penalties

Missed approvals are the most common cause of late filings. Auto File removes that risk.

You stay in control

You can review, approve early, or pause any filing during the review window.
