If you are on the Stripe Tax Engine Integration and you open your Stripe tax settings, you will not see Kintsugi listed as your tax calculation provider.
You may also see that Stripe Tax is still switched on. This is expected. This article explains why, and what you should do about the Stripe Tax setting.
Stripe's tax settings screen lists Stripe Tax and third-party tax apps that plug into Stripe's own tax calculation framework. Kintsugi does not work that way, so it will never appear there.
Instead, Kintsugi runs as an installed Stripe app. It reads each draft invoice, calculates the tax itself, and writes the tax amounts directly onto the invoice line items in real time. Nothing about that flow depends on Stripe's tax provider setting, which is why the absence of Kintsugi from that screen tells you nothing about whether your integration is working.
Check | Where | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
The app is installed | Stripe Dashboard > Apps | Kintsugi listed among your installed apps |
The connection is active | Kintsugi > Data Sources > Manage Integrations | Stripe under the Active tab |
Tax is being applied | Any recent Stripe invoice, tax line | Tax calculation source shows as Manual, meaning the amount came from Kintsugi |
If all three look right, your integration is healthy regardless of what the tax provider setting says.
Kintsugi never modifies your account-level Stripe Tax setting. Whatever that setting shows was set by you or your team, and it stays that way until you change it.
Kintsugi does switch Stripe's automatic tax off on each individual invoice it processes, so the two engines cannot both calculate tax on the same invoice. That is a per-invoice safeguard, not an account-level change.
Because the safeguard above applies per invoice, it does not cover every invoice. On any invoice that Kintsugi does not fully process, for example one billed to a jurisdiction where you have no active registration, Stripe Tax can still apply its own tax. That creates a risk of the same invoice being taxed twice.
To avoid this, disable Stripe Tax at the account level:
Log in to Stripe.
Go to Settings.
Scroll to Product Settings and click Tax.
Go to Integrations.
Confirm that Use automatic tax is disabled.
See Ensuring Accurate Sales Tax for Initial Subscriptions in Stripe for the full guide.
Once Stripe Tax is off, Kintsugi is the only engine calculating tax on your Stripe invoices, which is the intended setup for a tax engine integration.
What you are seeing | Is it expected? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
