Why No Use Tax Exposure or Filing Shows for a State

No use tax exposure or filing for a state usually means the upload was tagged as sales, the period differs, or use tax is not enabled. Fully taxed purchases still show, with zero owed. See how to fix it.
Updated yesterday

What You See

The state is missing from Monitoring under the use tax Tax Type, or no use tax filing is generated for a period where you expected one.

Why This Happens

  1. The upload was processed as sales instead of purchases

  2. The purchases fall outside the filing period you are looking at

  3. Vendors charged the full applicable tax on those purchases, so the state shows zero use tax owed. The exposure still appears, because a fully taxed purchase must still be reported

  4. You are looking for local-level exposure in Missouri, a Colorado home-rule jurisdiction, or Alaska, where liability is state level only

  5. Your organization is not enabled for use tax in production

How to Fix it

If the upload type is wrong:

  1. Open your upload history and check whether the file is marked as a purchase upload.

  2. If it was processed as sales, re-upload with Purchases selected, then confirm the rows appear under the Purchases tab in Transactions.

If the period does not match:

  1. Check the transaction dates on the affected purchases against the filing period.

If vendors charged full tax:

  1. No fix is needed. A fully taxed purchase still creates use tax exposure, because you are still required to report it. The line carries zero liability, so look for the state in Monitoring with $0 owed rather than a missing entry.

If you expected local-level amounts:

  1. No fix is available in this release. Local-level use tax in Missouri, Colorado home-rule jurisdictions, and Alaska is not calculated.

If your organization may not be enabled:

  1. Reach out via the chat bubble in the bottom right and ask us to confirm your enablement.

How to Confirm it is Resolved

The state appears in Monitoring under the use tax Tax Type, or the filing for the period shows the expected liability.
