Understanding VAT Jurisdictions in China

Updated 2 months ago

Unlike the United States — where sales tax is levied at the state and local levels — China applies VAT at the national (federal) level only. There are no regional, provincial, or municipal VAT jurisdictions.

Notes

Federal

The only VAT jurisdiction in China. All registrations, filings, and remittances are handled through the State Taxation Administration (STA).

This means that a business with a presence in China only needs one VAT registration per legal entity. Additional registrations may be required at the local tax bureau level for branches or separate business locations.

Address Jurisdiction

For address-related purposes within the Kintsugi platform (such as transaction address drop-downs), China is treated as a single-country jurisdiction.

Address Format

China follows this standard address format:

Region/Province → City → District/Town → Street/Community → Building/Unit/Room → Postal Code → Country

Example:

Mr. Zhang San Beijing Region, Dongcheng District, Beijing Municipality, East Chang'an Avenue, Building 3, Unit 2, Room 1203, Postal Code 100010, China
