Review Your International Tax Exposure

Track exposure across international jurisdictions
Updated 15 days ago

Kintsugi monitors your tax exposure in every country it supports, including countries your account is not yet set up to register and file in. This article shows you how to find those exposures, read them correctly, and ask our team to add coverage.

Time required: about 5 minutes You will need:

  • Access to your Kintsugi account

  • Transactions already syncing, so Monitoring has data to assess

  • An Admin or Owner role if you want to receive the exposure emails

Before You Start

Two terms do most of the work in this article, so it is worth getting them straight first.

Exposure means a tax obligation has been triggered in a jurisdiction and you are not registered there yet. Kintsugi tracks exposure everywhere it supports, on every plan, at no extra cost.

Coverage means the set of countries your account is set up for registration and filing. Most accounts start with the United States only. Countries are added to your coverage by our team, not by you.

Those two things move independently, and that is deliberate. You keep full visibility into a country's exposure before you have coverage there, which is the point: you get to see the obligation while you still have time to act on it.

When you have exposure in a country outside your coverage, Kintsugi does three things:

  • Flags the jurisdiction on the Monitoring page with its own visual treatment

  • Groups those jurisdictions into a Dashboard task called Review International Exposure, separate from Registrations to Finish

  • Emails your Admins and Owners each time a new international country becomes exposed

Steps in Reviewing International Tax Exposure

Step 1: Open your Dashboard.

a. Under Pending Tasks, look for International Exposures to Review.
The number beside it is how many international jurisdictions are exposed outside your current coverage.

b. Click Review to proceed.
This takes you to the Monitoring page with the Exposed tab selected.

Step 2: Check the Monitoring page.

a. Find the flagged rows.

Jurisdictions outside your coverage carry a distinct marker on the left edge of the row and a globe icon with a lock. Hover over the marker to see a tooltip confirming that the jurisdiction is not included in your current plan.

b. Read the row.

Each row shows the country, the jurisdiction, the nexus type that was triggered, the date you met it, tax collected, tax liability, and current status. The nexus type tells you why you are exposed, which matters when the amounts look small.

c. Narrow the list if you need to.

Click the filter icon at the top right of Monitoring, select a country under Country, then click Apply. You can also use the region selector beside the Monitoring heading.

d. Check the Collected Tax Nexus tab.

A jurisdiction can appear there as well as on Exposed if tax was collected while you were unregistered. The same flagged treatment applies on both tabs.

e. Click Register on the row you want to act on.

If the row shows Review instead, open it and choose Register from the side panel.

Step 3: Proceed with the Talk to Sales prompt.

For a country outside your coverage, clicking Register button opens a Talk to Sales window rather than the registration request form. Submit it and our team will follow up to add the country to your coverage.

How to Confirm it Worked

You will hear from our team after submitting the Talk to Sales form.

Once the country is added to your coverage, four things change on their own:

  • The flagged styling disappears from every jurisdiction in that country

  • Those jurisdictions leave the Review International Exposure task and rejoin Registrations to Finish

  • Register now opens the standard registration request form instead of the Talk to Sales window

  • Kintsugi stops sending international exposure emails for that country

If you still see the flagged treatment a few days after your coverage was confirmed, reach out to support so we can check the account.

Things to Know

  • You cannot add a country to your coverage yourself, and there is no setting or upgrade button that does it

  • Adding coverage is not the same as registering, and you still submit a registration request afterwards

  • Countries already in your coverage never get this treatment, so if Canada is in your coverage, an exposed Ontario row looks like any other row

  • Kintsugi does not send an in-app notification for international exposure outside your coverage, and email is the only alert for this

  • The email goes to Admins and Owners on the account, not to every user

  • Jurisdictions you have disregarded are excluded from this task, from the flagged treatment, and from the emails

  • Monitoring, exposure tracking, and the Exposure Map are unaffected by coverage, and they keep working in countries you have no coverage for

  • This article does not cover pricing for international registration or filing, which our team will walk you through

FAQs

Q: Why does Register open a Talk to Sales window instead of the registration form?

A: Because registration and filing in that country are not yet part of your account setup. Some international jurisdictions need a plan change, local requirements, or extra onboarding before we can register you. The conversation is how we sort that out.

Q: I got an email about a country where my sales are tiny. Why?

A: Exposure has more than one trigger. Economic nexus is only one of them, and physical presence or tax that was collected while you were unregistered will each create exposure regardless of sales volume. The nexus type column on Monitoring tells you which one applied.

Q: Will I get an email every time?

A: You get an email each time a new international country outside your coverage becomes exposed. If you already have other international exposures open, they are listed in the same email so you have the full picture in one place rather than a separate message for each.

Q: My Registrations to Finish count dropped. Did something break?

A: No. International jurisdictions outside your coverage used to be counted in Registrations to Finish even though you could not finish them there. They now live in Review International Exposure instead. Nothing was removed, and the two counts together cover the same jurisdictions as before.

Q: Can I stop seeing a country I have no intention of registering in?

A: You can disregard the jurisdiction, but read the consequences first. Disregarding stops all future alerts for it, including alerts for a new type of nexus, and it does not remove the underlying obligation. See How to Disregard a Nexus Recommendation.

Q: Does monitoring a country outside my coverage cost anything?

A: No. Monitoring is included on every plan, in every country Kintsugi supports.
