Understanding Barbados VAT Jurisdictions

Updated 3 months ago

If you sell goods or services to customers in Barbados, it helps to understand how the country's tax jurisdiction is structured. Unlike the United States, where sales tax is administered at the state, county, and city levels, Barbados keeps it straightforward: there is only one tax jurisdiction, and it is national.

How VAT Jurisdiction Works in Barbados

Jurisdiction Level

Details

National (Federal)

VAT is imposed and collected by the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) at the country level

Regional / Local

None. There are no parish-level or district-level VAT requirements

Because VAT is federal and uniform, the standard 17.5% rate applies to all taxable transactions throughout Barbados regardless of where in the country the buyer is located.

How Kintsugi Determines Taxability by Address

For a transaction to be subject to Barbados VAT, the buyer's address must include "Barbados" as the country. Kintsugi uses the full recipient address to determine whether Barbados VAT rules apply. A typical Barbados address follows this format:

Recipient Name / Business Name Building / Lot Number + Street Name + District Parish + Postal Code Barbados

Example:

Caribbean Supply Solutions Ltd. Building 2, Manor Lodge Complex, Lodge Hill St. Michael BB12023 Barbados

What This Means for You

Because there is only one VAT jurisdiction in Barbados, you only need one VAT registration to cover all sales into the country. You do not need to register separately for different parishes or regions.
