How to Deregister from Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) State Registrations

Updated 4 months ago

This article outlines the end-to-end process for deregistering from Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) Full Member states through the SST Registration System (SSTRS), including both state-level and full withdrawal scenarios.

Overview

If your business no longer needs to maintain sales tax registrations through the Streamlined Sales Tax Registration System (SSTRS), you can formally end those registrations directly within the SST portal. This process applies to SST Full Member states and must be completed carefully to ensure compliance and proper closeout of tax obligations.

IMPORTANT: Ending an SST registration does not eliminate any existing tax liabilities. Your CSP is still accountable for filing and remitting taxes through your selected end date. Kintsugi will only start filing on the first period after the end date/last day of sale.

Before You Begin

  • You must have access to your SST account.

  • If you are under contract with a Certified Service Provider (CSP), you cannot modify or end registrations directly. Coordination with your CSP is required.

  • Ensure all required returns will be filed through your deregistration date.

Step 1: Log in to the SST Portal

  1. Go to the SST Registration System:
    https://www.sstregister.org/Account/Login

  2. Log in using your SST credentials.

Step 2: Choose How You Want to Deregister

You can either:

  • End registration in specific states only, or

  • End registration in all SST states at once

Proceed with the option that aligns with your operational strategy.

Option A: End Registration in Specific States Only

Use this option if you want to remain registered in some states while exiting others.

A1. Access State Registrations

  1. From the Main Menu, click Edit State Registrations.

If you are under contract with a CSP, the system will prevent changes. Contact your CSP directly.

A2. Unregister From a State

  1. Under the Register column, uncheck the box next to the state you want to deregister.

  2. In the prompt that appears:

    • Enter your Last Day of Sales for that state

      • This date cannot be earlier than the original registration date.

    • If you still require a sales tax license in that state but do not want it managed through SST, check:
I need a sales tax registration for this state.

  3. Repeat as needed for additional states.

  4. Scroll to the bottom and click Submit to save your changes.

Compliance Reminder: Making sales in a state where you are not properly registered, collecting, or remitting tax may result in penalties.

Option B: End Registration in All SST States

Use this option if you no longer want any registrations managed through SST.

B1. Start Full Deregistration

  1. From the Main Menu, click End Registration in ALL States.

If you are under contract with a CSP, you must contact them to proceed.

B2. Complete the Deregistration Form

  1. Enter the End Date for all Streamlined states

    • Example: 01/31/2026

  2. Select one option:

☐ I am going out of business

I am unregistering ALL Streamlined States

Note: Kintsugi instructs customers to always select this second option.

  1. If you are still required to hold a sales tax license in certain states:

    • Check the box next to each applicable state.

    • Those states will be notified and may require direct registration.

  2. Review all information carefully.

B3. Submit

  1. Click Submit.

Once submitted:

  • The registration immediately ends.

  • You will no longer be able to access this SST registration.

  • If ended in error, a brand-new registration is required.

Special Cases

  • If you need to cancel a registration for a date not available in the system:

  • Cancellation dates cannot be changed once processed.
