Consumer use tax applies when you purchase taxable goods or services without paying sales tax at the point of sale. This typically happens with out-of-state purchases, online orders, or transactions where the seller did not collect tax. As the buyer, you are responsible for self-reporting and remitting that tax directly to the state.
If you have transactions that require use tax calculations, here is what you need to know about how Kintsugi supports this process.
At this time, Kintsugi does not offer automated import or calculation of consumer use tax within the platform. However, our tax operations team can assist you with a manual calculation service to help you determine the correct use tax amounts owed.
To get started and to help us assist you as efficiently as possible, please have the following ready:
A list of all transactions requiring use tax calculation
The taxable purchase amount for each transaction
The use tax amount for each transaction, if already calculated
The full address showing where each item was consumed or used, including street, city, county, and ZIP code
The filing period you need these calculated for (for example, February 2025 transactions)
Your state tax portal login credentials, if your state requires a separate use tax return
Once you submit this information, our team will calculate the applicable use tax based on the jurisdiction rates for each location.
If Kintsugi manages your filings, our team handles consumer use tax reporting across all jurisdictions. In most states, sales tax and use tax are already reported on the same return. However, a few states still require a separate use tax return. Mississippi is one example of a state where a separate return is needed.
To ensure accurate filing, please include the following for each transaction:
The taxable purchase amount
The calculated use tax amount (if already known)
The full address showing where the items were consumed or used
If you are filing in a state that requires a separate use tax return, you will also need to provide your state tax portal login credentials so our team can file on your behalf.
If you are unsure whether your state requires a separate return, or if you have questions about a specific filing period or jurisdiction, reach out to our support team and we will connect you with the right person on our tax operations team.
This is a manual process and is not automated within the Kintsugi platform at this time.
Turnaround time may vary depending on the volume of transactions submitted.
Our team will perform the calculations, but you are responsible for reviewing and confirming the accuracy of the transaction details you provide.
If you are ready to submit your transactions for use tax calculation, or if you have additional questions about this process, please contact our support team. We are happy to walk you through; just reach out to us using the chat in the bottom right corner of your screen.
