Kintsugi helps you stay compliant with Canadian tax regulations by automatically detecting whe your business needs to update its tax registration type. This guide explains why and how to make this important change.
Why Your Registration Type Might Change
Kintsugi monitors your business activities and automatically detects when your Canadian tax registration (Federal or Quebec) no longer qualifies for the Simplified regime.
This typically happens when your business:
Starts selling physical goods in Canada, or
Expands operations in a way that disqualifies it from the Simplified regime.
When the system detects this, you’ll see a dashboard alert and a pop-up message:
This means you need to switch to the Standard regime to stay compliant with Canadian tax authorities.
How to Submit a Regime Change Request
Follow these simple steps in your Kintsugi app to update your registration:
Log in to your Kintsugi app
Review the Alert
Go to the Registrations tab. You’ll notice the affected jurisdiction marked with a small warning icon. Hover over the warning icon to see the message prompting you to submit a regime change request.
Approve the Regime Change
Click the three dots (⋯) at the end of the registration row.
Select Approve Change Regime. This action serves as an automatic trigger, initiating a request.
Wait for Kintsugi to Complete the Update
Once our team has processed your request, you’ll get notified.
You’ll receive another prompt in the same menu.Acknowledge the Update
Click the three dots (⋯) again and select Acknowledge Standard Regime to finalize the change.
Important Notes
The regime change process is automated and system-triggered — you can’t manually request it unless prompted in the Kintsugi app.
This workflow ensures your registration type always reflects the correct compliance requirements.
If you see the prompt but aren’t sure why, it’s likely because your activities or nexus have changed.
