How Kintsugi Optimizes Invalid & Blank Addresses

Updated 4 months ago

How Kintsugi's Enrichment Workflow Streamlines Tax-Ready Address Data

Kintsugi applies a multilayered validation and enrichment process to ensure every transaction includes complete, reliable, and audit-defensible address information. This system closes gaps in location data, minimizes tax-calculation errors, and reduces manual address correction workloads.

Address Validation Across All Countries

Kintsugi validates addresses globally. Each country has a defined validation scope based on the level of locality and postal precision available for its tax framework:

  • United States: Validates state, city, county, postal code, and all supported combinations

  • Canada: Validates province and postal code

  • All other supported countries: If the country itself is valid, the address is marked partially validated, because limited or inconsistent locality datasets prevent deeper checks

  • Address suggestions are available for U.S. addresses only

These validation rules determine how our enrichment engine resolves missing or invalid fields.

Using Your Business Address for Blank Addresses

To support consistent tax calculations when transaction address data is unavailable, Kintsugi provides the Using Business Address for Missing Addresses setting. This behavior only applies when the setting is explicitly enabled in the app. Once turned on, Kintsugi may automatically apply your organization’s registered business address for transactions originating from your business location when the ship-to or bill-to address is missing, helping reduce calculation interruptions caused by incomplete data.

When the business address is applied

Kintsugi applies the business address under the following conditions:

  • The setting is enabled in the Kintsugi app.

  • The transaction country matches your organization’s business country.

  • All customer address fields are completely blank.

If any address field is partially populated, Kintsugi will not substitute the business address. If the transaction country does not match the business country, the business address is not used in any scenario.

For detailed instructions on enabling this setting and additional context, refer to the help article How to Enable “Using Business Address for Missing Addresses” in the Kintsugi App.

Enrichment Logic for Incomplete U.S. Addresses

For U.S. transactions that include only:

  • Country (US)

  • State

  • Missing: City, county, ZIP

…Kintsugi fills the missing fields using the City + County + ZIP combination with the highest combined tax rate for that state. This ensures:

  • No under-collection of tax

  • Audit-defensible tax positions

  • A consistent and deterministic fallback approach

How Invalid U.S. Addresses Are Corrected

For invalid U.S. addresses where only State + Country are present, the platform enriches the missing fields by selecting the City + County + ZIP combination with the highest combined tax rate available for that state.

This deterministic rule ensures consistent tax outcomes and prevents under-collection exposure.

Improved Quebec Address Optimization

Kintsugi now accurately assigns Quebec (QC) to Canadian addresses with postal codes beginning with K1A. This enhancement ensures proper provincial jurisdiction mapping for your transactions, supporting precise tax calculations and compliance for affected Canadian addresses.

Where You Can See Address Issues

All address-quality tasks—blank or invalid—appear in Pending Tasks on the dashboard.
If no items appear, there are no outstanding address issues.
