Indiana Sales Tax Account Number vs. State Tax ID (TID): Key Differences Explained & Where to Find Them

Updated 15 days ago

In Indiana, the terms "Sales Tax Account Number" and "State Tax ID" are closely related, but they serve slightly different roles within the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) system.

Here is the breakdown of what each is, where to find them, and how they appear in the state portal.

1. State Tax ID vs Sales Tax Account Number

Term

What it is

Format

State Tax ID or (Indiana Taxpayer ID (TID)

This is your 10-digit State Tax ID (TID), assigned by the state when you registered for your sales tax license.

10-digit number (e.g., 0123456789)

Sales Tax Account Number

Your specific sales tax account identifier consists of the 'RST-' prefix followed by a 10-digit number assigned to you by the state. The 10-digit number is not necessarily the same as TID.

RST-[10-digit number] (e.g., RST-0000000000)

2. Where to Find the State Tax ID and Sales Tax Account Number

You can find the state tax ID (TID) in various ways.

1. Registered Retail Merchant Certificate (RRMC)

This is your "Seller's Permit." It is the most important document for your Indiana sales tax account. You will see the 10-digit TID and the 3-digit LOC prominently displayed here.

2. Welcome Letter / Registration Notice

When you first register via INBiz or the DOR, you receive a welcome letter that also shows the 10-digit TID.

3. Accessing Them in the State Portal (INTIME)

The Indiana Taxpayer Information Management Engine (INTIME) is the official portal for managing your taxes. You can find both numbers there easily:

  1. Log in to INTIME.

  2. Summary Tab: On the main dashboard after logging in, you will see both as shown in the screenshot below.
