Two-Factor Authentication for State Tax Portals Overview

Manage your own 2FA settings so Kintsugi can access your state tax accounts securely and file on your behalf
Updated 29 days ago

We prepared helpful guides for you to help you take full control of your state tax portal access by managing your own Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) settings. This ensures seamless and secure access for Kintsugi to file on your behalf.

Why 2FA Matters

Most state tax agencies require Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) to verify who's logging into your business tax account. Kintsugi needs reliable access to these portals to file accurately and on time — so when a state changes its 2FA requirements, we ask you to update your settings directly rather than routing it through support. This keeps onboarding faster and avoids delays caused by manual handoffs.

Time to complete: Most states take 5–10 minutes per portal. You'll do this once per state where you're registered.

Prerequisites

  • Your login credentials for the state tax portal

  • Access to your email (for states that still use it directly for 2FA)

  • Access to your Kintsugi admin dashboard, and get your Kintsugi Virtual Mail Group (VMG) ID — some states now require this in place of your personal email for 2FA codes. Find yours in the Kintsugi app under Configuration → Kintsugi Mail → Virtual Mail Group → Group ID. See the full Kintsugi Mail guide if this is your first time setting one up.

Not every state needs action — some don't use 2FA at all. Jump straight to the group that applies to you.

Don't see your state?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no state-level sales tax, so there's no portal or 2FA to set up. If you're registered in one of these, you can skip this process entirely.

Quick FAQs

Q: I'm locked out of a state portal, what now?
A: Double-check your credentials and try a password reset directly through the state portal first. If that doesn't resolve it, reach out to us via chat and we'll help you regain access.

Q: Can I use the same browser session for multiple states?
A: Yes. Just select "Trust this device/browser" when prompted, so you won't need a new code every time you switch states.
